Man dead, woman rescued after falling down 80-foot cliff in UTV at Kentucky adventure park

A man has died and a woman was injured after a UTV accident in a Stanton, Kentucky adventure park.

In a statement on social media, Powell County Search & Rescue said reports came in around 8:40 p.m. Sunday March 17 of two people who were making their way to the parking lot at Hollerwood Off-Road Adventure Park in a UTV, or an off-road vehicle, when they lost control and fell off an 80-foot multi-pitch cliff.

Powell County, Kentucky is about 49 miles east of Lexington. The county is also home to Red River Gorge, a federally-designated National Geological Area, National Natural Landmark, National Archaeological District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Red River Gorge is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, camping and rock climbing.

Woman in UTV accident was saved by rescue crews and bystanders

The female victim survived the fall and was able to call 911 herself, telling dispatchers she was trapped inside the vehicle and that the male victim had been ejected.

Numerous emergency and rescue crews, as well a civilian bystanders went to search the different trails via UTV. One team was able to locate the woman, and a paramedic was able to set up an improvised rope system to get down to her. Eventually, with the help of multiple rope systems, rescuers were able to take her out of the vehicle, where she was moved into an air ambulance.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, Powell County Search & Rescue said in a statement. No further update was given on the woman's status, and the identities of the man and woman have not yet been publicly released.
